The Secrets of Winterizing Aquatic Pond Plants

Useful Tips To help You Winterize Popular Aquatic Plants

  • Water Lillies - Remove diseased and mottled leaves to prevent them from falling off and decaying on the pond floor.
  • Floating Water Lettuce need to be removed from the pond and kept secure indoors, in frost free, light shade. If there are any off shoots, separate them from the parent plant and float in shallow water at above 7°c.
  • The floating Water Soldier will sink to the bottom of the pond, prior to the winter frost, where the water temperatures are warmer.
  • Pioneering marginal pond plant varieties such as Bog Bean Spearwort varieties, Parrots Feather and Reed Maces will need to be cut back to about a third of the original size. Fast growing reeds and rushes will also need to be cut back.
  • In July remove exotic marginal aquatic plants such as the yellow and spotty leafed Zantedeschia elliotiana, Z. pentlandii and the pink tinged Z. rehmannii from the pond and store them in a green house. They should be kept under greenhouse staging that is well above freezing. Bring them to life again in February.
  • Remove any exotics like Canna hybrids lilies, Arum lilies and Lobelia cardinalis and store them over winter in a frost free green house. As an alternative you can settle Arum Lilies deep in the fish pond.
  • Water Hyacinth produce a beautiful flower and help to prevent both planktonic algae and string algae varieties from developing. It can be planted into loam or compost in a frost-free greenhouse. Alternatively float in shallow trays of water. Over winter at over 10°c.
  • Fairy Moss succumbs to hard winter frosts, when it turns bright red before disappearing. If you decide to ointer this ponf plant then place it in a bucket in a frost free, light environment.
